Affordable Winter Lighting: Kosnic's Fire-Rated Downlights and LED Battens, In Stock at SM Electrical Supplies

Looking ahead to winter we look at cost effective LED products that reduce bills and also save time on your next project.

Key Points for Installers

  • Energy prices are up again this winter, but running costs come down to efficacy and hours used, not just the headline price cap

  • Fitting the wrong fire rating fails a check. Match the downlight to what your ceiling needs: 30, 60 or 90 minutes

  • Mauna 3 Kosnic LED downlight switches wattage and colour temperature on site. One SKU, multiple specs covered

  • Niva 3 runs down to –20°C, but it's IP20: dry, enclosed garages only

  • Satin chrome, polished chrome, black, and antique brass bezels for the Mauna 3 are sold separately

  • Both in stock now at our Kirkcaldy branch, no waiting on a courier

Why Your Lighting Costs More to Run This Winter

Energy bills are going up again. Ofgem's price cap for October to December 2026 sits at £1,723 a year for a typical dual-fuel household, up £60 on the previous quarter.

Gas is driving that rise. Electricity's holding is broadly stable.

Days shrink fast through winter. A fitting running 4 hours a day in June might run 8 to 10 hours by December.

Wattage tells you what you're drawing. Lumens per watt tells you what you're actually getting for it.

Switchable-wattage fittings let you right-size a job on site instead of guessing.

Kosnic Mauna 3: The Fire-Rated Downlight for This Winter's Retrofit Jobs

Cut a hole in a fire-resisting ceiling and you've opened a weak point, unless the fitting closing it matches the rating.

That's exactly the retrofit problem loft insulation top-ups cause. Insulation goes down. Ceiling penetrations get scrutinised. Old downlights that aren't rated for it don't pass.

Kosnic's Mauna 3 is built for this job:

  • 30, 60 or 90-minute fire rating

  • Switchable output between 4W and 6W, up to 132 lm/W

  • Sits under loft insulation at 40mm void clearance, with no thermal degradation

  • Colour temperature switches on site between 3000K and 6000K, with 4000K in between

  • Tool-free plug-in terminals speed up install day

  • 5-year warranty

  • White bezel as standard. Chrome and antique brass bezels are sold separately if the finish needs to match

Kosnic Niva 3: Which IP Rating Does Your Garage Actually Need?

IP ratings run two digits: first is dust, second is moisture. IP20 covers basic dust resistance with no real protection against water.

That's fine for a dry, enclosed integral garage.

It's not fine for:

  • Open-sided garages where wind-driven rain gets in

  • Damp outbuildings

  • Anywhere near a wash bay or exposed to direct rain

  • For the majority of garages IP20 is the perfect fit.

How Cold Is Too Cold? The Niva 3's –20°C Rating Explained

Minus 20°C. That's the ambient temperature the Niva 3's built to start and run in, no flickering, no failed starts.

Fluorescent battens struggle in the cold. Ballasts slow to start and tubes take longer to reach full brightness, right when you need light straightaway on a freezing morning.

What the Niva 3 brings instead:

  • Up to 156 lm/W

  • Switchable wattage from 9W to 63W across 2ft to 6ft lengths. One SKU, several garage sizes covered

  • Colour temperature switches on site too

  • DALI-2 compatible

  • 7-year product warranty, plus 2 years covering on-site issues

Do LED Lights Really Push Your Electric Bill Up?

No, not if you're switching from anything else.

LEDs use a fraction of the electricity of halogen or fluorescent for the same light output. Running a fitting for 8 hours instead of 4 costs more overall, but that's down to hours used, not a badly performing fitting.

What actually pushes bills up:

  • Old fluorescent tubes losing efficiency as they age

  • Over specifying wattage instead of matching it to the room

  • Leaving high-wattage fittings on longer than needed

Switchable-wattage LEDs like the Mauna 3 and Niva 3 solve the second one directly. Set the wattage the job needs, not the wattage you happened to have in stock.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do my downlights need to be fire rated?

Yes, if they're going into a ceiling that's fire-resisting, typically where there's a habitable room above. Regulations require any opening in that ceiling to stay adequately protected, and an unrated downlight doesn't meet that.

Are GU10 downlights fire rated? Not automatically.

GU10 is just the lamp base, not a fire rating. The fitting itself needs a specific fire-rated housing, like the Mauna 3, regardless of which lamp base it takes.

Do LED lights make your electric bill go up?

Only if you're comparing hours used, not fittings. Switch from fluorescent or halogen to LED at the same wattage and your bill drops. Run it for longer through the darker months and the total cost reflects those extra hours, not a worse fitting.

Is 10,000 lumens too bright for a garage?

It depends on the garage and what you're doing in it. A single-car space doing light storage needs far less than a workshop garage with a bench and tools. Switchable-wattage fittings like the Niva 3 let you set the output to match the space instead of guessing at a fixed number.

Is it safe to leave LED lights on all night?

Generally yes. LEDs run far cooler than halogen or fluorescent, so the fire risk from extended use is much lower. Leaving any fitting on when it's not needed still costs money though, so it's more a running-cost question than a safety one for most modern LED fittings.

What IP rating do I need for garage LED lighting?

IP20 covers a dry, enclosed integral garage. Anything open-sided, damp, or exposed to a wash bay needs a higher rating, and pushing an IP20 fitting into that environment risks early failure.
